Anona – Anona EP
Ah, again, November is a great time to soak back into the excellent offerings that were missed over the year. Somehow while nabbing great new singles from The New Eves and Wax Machine, I’d missed out on this great debut EP from Anona. Ella Russell is a member/collaborator with both outfits, tackling drums and flute in The New Eves and adding vocals to Wax Machine’s albums. The latter’s Lau Ro recorded and produced Russell’s recent, eponymous EP, a collection of songs that embrace thickly arranged jazz-folk forms, sailing towards ‘60s eddies of sound that overlap with Fairport and Julie Driscoll. Though short, the whole of her eponymous release is captivating, lulling the listener into half-dreams before winding down into taut jazz grooves that burn with a pungent smoke. I’d recommend checking out anything that Russell is involved in, but from the sounds of this EP, her solo works are shaping up to be ones to keep a close eye on.
