Ricky Albeck

It’s not the first time that Ricky Albeck has popped up around these parts, but the Aussie songwriter finally releases his debut LP this week. Like the EPs and singles that preceded it, Nocturnal benefits from Albeck’s rumpled wit and confessional songwriting. While he comes from a homegrown country legacy, Albeck’s songs embrace a more recent strain of Aussie country. Throwing in with RSTB favorites like Quality Used Cars and Family Jordan, Albeck’s sound leans into the twang and temperament but lets a good dose of Aussie Indie rough up the edges.

In a lot of ways Albeck’s delivery draws from the exuberant pleas of Will Sheff in his Okkervil days, letting the emotion crack and crease his delivery. The album dives into struggles with expectations, tumbling through ruminations on alcohol, health, happiness, and banality. There’s a vulnerable spirit to Nocturnal, sidling in like a friend that shares more than was asked, but whose affable spirit never makes it seem like a burden. The songs well up in the throat, impossible to ignore, crashing through the speakers in their bluster and cleaning up the mess in the more tender moments. Albeck’s been finding his footing over the last few EPs and with Nocturnal he’s getting on solid ground.
