The Reds, Pinks and Purples – “Learning To Love A Band”

Avatar

A second single of hazed indie pop rolls out of the upcoming album from RSTB faves The Reds, Pinks and Purples. The jangle-pop ranks are legion these days, but among the assembled acolytes none has captured the spirit of weathered ennui better than Glenn Donaldson. Over noon-riser strums, peeking through the pillowed production, Donaldson unfolds a tale of obsessive fandom. The track plays into the album’s themes of pop idolatry, an increasingly pervasive aspect of spending any amount of time online in music spaces. In Donaldson’s hands, though, the narration is one of sighed recognition rather than a bubbling of enthusiasm. It’s the voice of someone who’s seen it before and felt the sting of disappointment. Never meet your heroes, kids. The new record, Unwishing Well, is out April 12th from Slumberland.
