Perfect Actress – “Perfect Actress”

It’s always a bold move to name both a release and song after your band. In the grand tradition of those who’ve rolled that lane before them and won, Aussies “Perfect Actress” stick the landing, capping off their debut EP with the sinew and snap of their eponymous opus. The song is a case study in switching gears — growling at one moment, propulsive and rubbery the next. It wades heavily into post-punk’s malleable bass, but that chorus is a pure punk paint peeler. Further into the song, there’s just something that feels indebted to a synth-pop phase percolating in the mid-section, owing up, perhaps, to the band’s admitted love of Gary Newman and China Crisis. Perfect Actress have bolted into the live sphere locally and are just getting things set on record, with a digital release of the EP out now and a physical cassette slated for later in the summer.
