Jeffrey Alexander + The Heavy Lidders – “Black Peter”

Avatar

Ah another new cut slips out from the upcoming Jeffrey Alexander + The Heavy Lidders LP. The eponymous album is a turn away from the band’s recent live sets which explore some burnt core jams and blues exhumations. Instead the album sees Alexander bend pop into driftwood shapes of Cosmic Americana and beyond. Here the band approaches The Dead with a keen ear for the desperation in the Workingman cut “Black Peter.” The cover strips out any sunshine from the original, leaning into the song’s harrowing plea for help. With a vocal accompaniment from Marissa Nadler, the song crawls from the fever delirium to hear angels calling over the hill. Alexander and his tight crew of players turn this into one of the most ravaged versions of the song yet, and it fits in nicely with the album’s cache of psych-flecked burners. The debut from The Heavy Lidders arrives August 6th from Arrowhawk.
