Giant Day – “Walk With A Shadow”

Avatar

An inky, aqueous single slinks out today from Giant Day, the psych-pop project from Derek Almstead (Circulatory System, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Glands, Elf Power, of Montreal) and Emily Growden. The group is the first new Elephant 6 official band in over 15 years, and they kick off their upcoming album, Glass Narcissus, with the dark, propulsive pounce of “Walk With A Shadow.” Rubbery bass, pulses from the first strains, while Emily’s vocals curl and coil over the top of the track.

Derek gives the song some context, “This song was written in May 2020, during those scary unknowing stages of the beginning of the pandemic. We were still living in Athens, under complete lockdown and starting to unravel… I was obsessing about the insecurity of the future and deep in my own head. The specter of physical and mental health deterioration, real and imagined, stuck with me like a shadow. I was listening to hours and hours of podcast interviews, which is essentially like sitting in on strangers’ psychotherapy sessions. I think that helped me see my fears a bit better from the outside, and this kind of pop-aggression song was born. Our friend Jeff Tobias of Sunwatchers and Modern Nature brought it all together with his trombone and bass clarinet lines.” The new album is out August 23rd from The Elephant 6 Recording Company.
