April Magazine – “Shrine”

Avatar

Why not cap things off today with a new cut from San Francico’s April Magazine? The band, which features members of The Reds, Pinks and Purples and Flowertown have a new cassette coming soon on Paisley Shirt Records. On record the band hew close to labelmates Flowertown and Tony Jay, living in the space between tape hiss and recycled air and floating on hazed sunbeams of sound. The opener “Shrine” finds bassist Kati Mashikian lost in between laconic strums and a the cavernous splash of snare. There’s a beautiful, woolen bliss about the band’s songs and this one captures it well. While their recordings seem to revel in the lo-fi wonderland they’ve created, I’d also recommend checking out the band’s excellent live session from Band in the Van, which sees them get a bit of clarity without losing a bit of their hazy charms. The new tape is out July 16th.
