Whitney’s Playland – “Rain Song”
The indie-pop well springs eternal out of San Francisco these days as more and more RSTB faves seem to pop up there everyday. Meritorio adds another gem to their stable of artists with the debut from Whitney’s Playland. The band is fronted by Inna Showalter, who last surfaced here with Blades of Joy, whose debut is a woefully overlooked treasure of sun faded honey-dripped pop. It seems that quite a bit of those qualities bleed over into Whitney’s Playland. The band is primarily the work of Showalter along with longtime friend George Tarlson (Grandma’s Boyfriend) and the pair use the new venture to dig into a love of ‘90s sounds that revel in the slow, woolen end of the spectrum. With shades of dreampop and fuzzed aesthetics, the band latch onto the legacies of Yo La Tengo, The Sundays, and American Analog Set getting lost in their most shrouded moments. The debut from Whitney’s Playland, Sunset Sea Breeze, is out March 17th from Meritorio and Paisley Shirt.
