James Toth Presents… Imaginational Anthem vol. XIII – Songs of Bruce Cockburn
Tompkins Square’s Imaginational Anthem series has long been a favorite around here. Past entries have found RSTB faves like Ryley Walker, Henry Parker, Luke Schneider, and Hayden Pedigo at the helm and this time James Toth (Wooden Wand, James & The Quiet) steps up to the task. The series has sometimes served as tribute, sometimes as deep dive into genre. This time the set skews to the former, serving as a loving ode to the works of Bruce Cockburn. Toth has assembled an excellent swath of players this time around, roping in plenty of familiar names around these parts — Eli Winter, Matthew ‘Doc’ Dunn, Powers Rolin Duo, Wet Tuna, Lou Turner, Jerry David DeCicca, and Bill Callahan among them. The latter team up for a cover of Cockburn’s “Forty Years In The Wilderness,” a tender take that’s emblematic of the need for such a collection in the first place. The comp finds its way out April 5th from Tompkins Square.
