Lou Turner – “Ride The Melting”

Following the announcement last week of their new compilation, Measure, Pour & Mixtape: Music for Cooking, Spinster Records lets out another new track from the collection. This time, the cut comes from an RSTB favorite, songwriter Lou Turner. Turner’s last outing for the label found her further digging into her tender folk strain, and that continues through the soft glow of “Ride The Melting.” The compilation’s aim, to “make music the way you cook,” finds Turner inspired by the soft sizzle of butter in a pan. The sound opens the track, letting the comforting, natural percussive pop of the pan mirror the song’s resolve. Inspired by a Robert Frost line, the song winds itself around a shift in outlook, “I’ve been harvesting without taking, reaping without grieving, yielding to the unseen,” she sings on “Melting.” It’s a lovely companion piece to Microcosmos, and just a taste of what’s to come in the comp. The record features an admirable cross-section of talent from within Spinster’s stable while reaching into to their outer orbits. With tracks from Avey Tare, Sally Anne Morgan, Magic Tuber Stringband, Michael Hurley, and more, this is an excellent companion in the kitchen or out. The comp finds its way to the world December 1st.
