Good Looking Son – “Mr. Wonderful”
I’ve long been a fan of The Cowboys around here. The Midwest garage-soul band has always dug a tenderness out of their songs and that’s in large part due to the vocals of Keith Harman. Now, Harman is striking out on his own as Good Looking Son, with a debut on the way the month from Feel It Records. “Mr. Wonderful” exemplifies the best impulses that The Cowboys embraced — laconic strums, a shaggy propulsion, and Harman’s buttered sun vocals over the top, letting the hooks slide in easy. The song butts against power pop at times, but there’s still a darker shading to Good Looking Son, feeling every bit the extension of the songs Harman was writing with The Cowboys. The band has always seemed to be an overlooked outfit left the garage heads who dig a bit deeper. If the likes of Royal Headache, ABC Gum, or The Murlocs have found their way onto your speakers, it seems only natural to file Good Looking Son right alongside them. Fantasy Weekend is out November 19th.
