Setting – “Zoetropics”

A newly minted outfit from Nathan Bowles (Pelt, Black Twig Pickers), Jaime Fennelly (Mind Over Mirrors) and Joe Westerlund (Califone, Sylvan Esso) debuted last week, and as I start to pick up the pieces from a week off for vacation this is an excellent way to ease back into the woods. Anchored by Westerlund’s tightly wound percussive patter, the first glimpse into their upcoming album, Shone a Rainbow Light On, is a dark, motorik melter. Falling in nicely with some of the hypnogogic folk on Ghost Box or the works of Tenniscoates, the song simmers with an insistent energy that’s hovering between white-knuckle tension and oblivion. The new album is out September 29th from Paradise of Bachelors.
