R.E. Seraphin – “Swingshift EP”

Avatar

Some formats just fit an artist and R.E. Seraphin seems at home just north of the single and just shy of the full length. Reveling in the freedom to explore in an EP, Seraphin has crafted some excellent offerings for the Paisley Shirt imprint over the past few years and now he moves to fellow indie hub Mt St Mtn. He’s set his indie pop prism out into the light, letting out different shades with each new compact classic. This time he polishes his pop and keeps it close to the heart, but also breezes into a more stadium-sized sound that bursts from the bedroom to boil solos under the big lights. With a backing band that culls from local faves like Mantles and Tony Molina’s outfit, the understated indie pop takes on a larger shadow here.

With visions of Ultra Vivid Scene, Cleaners From Venus, and the outsized pop of Young Guv in mind, Seraphin’s new works bloom in the Bay Area sun. Throw in a couple of covers from Wipers (rendered with a smooth edge) and Television Personalities, the Swingshift EP is another necessary pickup from one of S.F.’s new wave of indie pop stunners.
