Magic Fig – “Goodbye Suzy”

Avatar

Long simmering California collective Magic Fig lets out the first taste of their upcoming EP, out this Spring from Silver Current Records. The Bay Area band culls in members from quite a few familiar bands around these parts, including members of The Umbrellas, Whitney’s Playland, Almond Joy, and Healing Potpourri. While that round up speaks to jangles and strums that skew towards the indie pop parlance, the band instead digs deeper towards ‘60s prog-folk and the Canterbury connection. The opener from the upcoming eponymous offering feels as comfortable alongside Fairport as they do contemporaries like Anona or Jane Weaver. “Goodbye Suzy” is propulsive n’ proggy, but lets its head get lost in the wispiered clouds of the upper atmosphere. It’s a gorgeous bout of psychedelic pop that begs the listener to keep a keen ear on ‘em this year. The new EP is produced by Joel Robinow (Once and Future Band).
