James Elkington and Nathan Salsburg – “Buffalo Stance”

James Elkington and Nathan Salsburg reconnect for a third album of duets and, among the originals and some traditional excavating, the pair scoops out an unlikely cover for their first introduction to the new album. Picking apart the melodic lines in Neneh Cherry’s 1988 hit “Buffalo Stance,” the duo mount the daunting task of turning a song that’s primarily built out of rapped verses and abrasive beats into a soft and sanguine lullaby tugged from entwined strings. The beauty of the cover is that, to those familiar with the Cherry original, it stands as a twist of nostalgia, but it easily stands alone for those just here for the understated beauty of James and Nathan’s delivery. The new album, All Gist, is out April 12th from Paradise of Bachelors.
