Bill MacKay – “When I Was Here”
Always a welcome name around these parts, it’s great to see Bill MacKay back today with news of a new album for Drag City. It’s been a few years since Bill’s been a solo slinger, having wafted through here alongside Cooper Crain in the mercurial BCMC, Nathan Bowles for a bluegrass ramble, and Charles Rumback and Douglas McCombs in Black Duck. He sets aside these tributaries for a taut tumble through folk with a slight blues burn working its way through the edges. “When I Was Here” slips through on a chugging rhythm, courtesy of Mikel Patrick Avery (Natural Information Society, Jeff Parker). The song opens into a gnarl of guitar that could only come from MacKay, a verdant volley into the ring that builds anticipation for the upcoming album, Locust Land. The album is out May 24th from Drag City.
