Beautify Junkyards – “Verde Pino”

The excellent Beautify Junkyards release a new single for Ghost Box today. The included cuts are culled from their recent concert film Cosmorama Moving Images, a live in the studio set the band recorded when proper live opportunities weren’t presenting themselves in 2021 due to the pandemic. The band starts off here with a lovely cover of Nuno Rodrigues’ “Verde Pino.” The song was written by the Banda do Casaco songwriter, but released as a single in ’71 by Portuguese singer Daphne, and this version serves as the band’s inspiration. The original is swept up in soaring dynamics and UK folk touchstones, but Beautify Junkyards present it in a more relaxed tone. Still set with swelling strings and fingerpicked guitar, but rendered more velveteen with a psychedelic ripple riding throughout. The band’s newest addition, Martinez, takes on vocal duties and tempers the heightened delivery of the Daphne original to something more laden with dream and desire. The song captures the band at their best, lodged between dreampop and Tropicália. The flip of the limited 7” is a live version of Dupla Exposicao from their recent album Cosmorama. The single is out now on Ghost Box and the concert film is available to rent in full on Vimeo.
