More huge news on this Bancamp Friday as perennial favorites Psychic Temple return with a new album that’s packed with collaborators. The band was last seen around these parts with an exploration of “Planet Caravan” and in the interim bandleader Chris Schlarb has been plenty busy with his Big Ego studio/label ushering in works from Dave Easley, David Lord, Maria Elena Silva, and more. The new record finds the outfit primarily featuring synth composer Lisa Bella Donna but the two side-long tracks also cull in Easley, Mike Baggetta (mssv), Tabor Alen (Cherry Glazer), Isaiah Morfin, Steph Richards, and a choir of friends and contemporaries. The first cut finds the ensemble stretching out towards the 19-minute mark, building spiritual jazz spires and plumbing the infinite. It’s both deeply cosmic and elemental, moving through the listener in waves. The band never ceases to reach for and achieve new sonic heights, and this one should bump to the top of the list of 2023 essentials. The new record, A Universe Regards Itself, is out November 17th from Big Ego.
