Normil Hawaiians – “Still Obedient”

Avatar

Upset the Rhythm continue their series of reissues and excavations of Normal Hawaiians catalog. Dark World collects some of the band’s earliest works, culling together looser, more raw recordings from their formative years in ’79-’81. The darkness bubbling under “Still Obedient” is palpable. The song pulses along on a gnashing guitar line that breaks into shredded plastic pieces rather than find a groove, bashing the song against each surface it encounters. Stark and seething its a good indication of where the band would find themselves as they pushed towards their debut. The comp includes Peel sessions, cuts recorded around the time of their split cassette with Berlin, and an early 7” single version of “The Beat Goes On.” The new collection is out September 24th.
