Donna Allen – “Nothing Can Stop Us Now”

A spare collection is released today from Donna Allen’s home-recorded demo works, a preamble to a proper record out soon from ever/never. The collection from the Chronophage songwriter is confessional, as the tag ‘Song Diary’ might imply, an affecting glimpse behind the scenes, raising anticipation for a record that frames her writing in more embellished setting. Although, the works here should find plenty of appeal to those who’ve kept Sebadoh, Richard Thompson, Elliott Smith, and Tara Jane O’Neil on the speakers. The collection’s most cutting track is the trans anthem “Nothing Can Stop Us Now,” a song that hits particularly hard in light of current legislation plaguing multiple U.S. states. Chronohage has been such a constant around here, with each new record only further cinching their status as site faves, but with this preview of her solo works, I’m interested to see what Allen’s next as well.
