Tobacco City – “America / Motorcade”

2023’s American anniversary feels particularly fraught with ill ease — a cocktail shaker of shame and trepidation mixing with the roman candle smoke. Through the haze, Tobcacco City offer up an ode to the days of their youth. Drunken escapades, poolside revelry, storefront salvation, black mold, and the aimless side of this American life — a hazy memory of an ‘90s youth that may or may not have existed. Lodged somewhere between VCR chewed Spielberg sequences and hot dog commercials doused in lite beer, there’s a flip book flicker of a life that was always crumbling just out of frame. The crumble’s just gettin’ clearer of late. The b-side is a sweetly swaying summer ode that strips away the band’s cosmic production and lets Lexi Goddard shine through. It’s a late night barroom spot light that sends shivers down every last listener in the joint. Good to see the band sending something sweet in the small format.
