Motorists – “Call Control”

Avatar

I loved the debut from Canadian power pop trio Motorists, so it comes with built in excitement as the band steers into a second album this year. The first single was an infectious, insistent cut about a desert phone booth, and the second is just as barbed with hooks. Though this time around, under the jubilant bounce of guitars and taut rhythms, the band simmers with a dissatisfaction at the working conditions for musicians, a topic that seems to be bubbling its way into more than one album this year, to no surprise. The song swerves close to a bubblegum beat, just needing a few handclaps to really lean into the aesthetic. Instead the band pair that effervescent air with a New Wave wobble. The new album, Touched By The Stuff, is out May 24th from We Are Time / Bobo Integral.
