Mikaela Davis – “Cinderella”

Yet another excellent single off of the upcoming Mikaela Davis record this week. More so than any of the early singles, there’s a weight to “Cinderella,” turning the fairy tale topside, with a note of soured love and broken expectations. With Southern Star behind her, the band brings a dose of bittersweet country comedown, but “Cinderella” might be the most prominent centerpiece for Davis’ harp on the album. She plays in cascading waves, adding to the emotional heft of the song. The crushing disappointment of dreams dissolved hangs heavy, but Davis’ delivery also gives the song a strong sense of resolve. The new record is almost here, arriving August 4th from Kill Rock Stars.
