Mendoza Hoff Revels – “Diablada”

Avatar

One of the most exciting parts of William Parker’s Mayan Space Station was the inclusion of Ava Mendoza’s searing guitar. Mendoza’s turned up in Bill Orcutt’s Guitar Quartet this year as well, but there’s more to come from the exemplary guitarist. This fall finds her among excellent company on the debut from Mendoza Hoff Revels. Alongside Devin Hoff (electric bass, compositions) and featuring James Brandon Lewis (tenor sax) & Ches Smith (drums), the band taps into a turbulent scorch of heavy, heady jazz rock. The first cut “Diablada” is infused with the same spirit that she brought to Parker’s outing, while summoning to mind visions of Sonny Sharrock’s best works. Mendoza’s guitars burn and bend, winding around Lewis’s knife-sharp sax lines. The new album, Echolocation is out October 13th from AUM Fidelity and its highly recommended you get it on your list.
