David Nance & Mowed Sound – “Tumbleweed”

Quickly approaching, and fast rising as one of my favorite releases of the year, the new David Nance record is shaping into one of the best surprises of 2024. Odds are on that it doesn’t lose any ground by the time next December rolls around. The second single, “Tumbleweed” finds Nance and Mowed Sound exploring a more serene side of his catalog, strumming at a sauntered pace and letting a light lacing of flute into the mix as well. The song finds Nance swooning into a duet with past collaborator Pearl Lovejoy Boyd, who first fell into the mix on 2022’s Ash Wednesday. This makes a much more official entry to her into the canon. The song is simple, but affecting, an exemplary peek into the shift that Nance has made with Mowed Sound. The new record is out February 9th from Third Man.
