Cut Worms – “Ballad of the Texas King”

Avatar

Last week got busy, but that’s no reason to ignore this gem from Cut Worms, That’s just negligent. Max Clarke returns after the ambitious environs of the double LP, Nobody Lives Here Anymore, for a more pared down piece coming later this summer. The first single from his eponymous new record finds that familiar balance between classic country and the velvet bloom of The Everly Brothers, Brill Building pop, and the softer side of indie. Backed by a few familiar faces from John Andrews and the Yawns, “Ballad of the Texas King” reclines into a dewy coolness that drapes quite a few of Clarke’s works, turning a tale of self-reflection into an ear worm that’s hard to escape. The new record is out July 21st from Jagjaguwar.
