Allah-Las – “The Stuff”

Avatar

While the new Allah-Las album might share a name with Young’s ’75 classic, the first single “The Stuff,” seems to imply that the band is working closer to creating their Trans than copping moves from Zuma. In fact, the song and the album take a tack away from the expectations of the FM pantheon. With a sun-fried boogie — shot through with breezes of Eno’s pop crop, Tubeway, and Ultravox — the band are far from their usual surf n sun breezes. Seems the band isn’t letting anyone’s needs fence them in on this one, rifling through the more idiosyncratic side the ‘70s and promising shades of Peter Ivers, Roxy, Popul Vuh, and Ashra on the new record. Another promising gem out of Panoramic Studios this year, following the upcoming Mapache record, the ‘Las decamped to the scenic environs of the studio along with Jeremy Harris for a few sessions that let them loosen the yoke of their past. From the sounds of “The Stuff” that shake up is working its magic. The new record, Zuma 85, is out October 13th from Innovative Leisure.
