Young Guv – “Lo Lo Lonely”

After a few singles that dabbled with amber-colored country strains, I’d expected Ben Cook to lean into the dust of this new direction. The turnabout seemed even more plausible once stories of Cook finding himself a bit marooned in the New Mexico desert, but perhaps that will surface on Guv IV. Today, Cook announces a double nunchuck of power pop with the announcment of Guv III & IV , preceded by the fuzzed and foaming “Lo Lo Lonely.” The song swoons with a backbone of girl-group melodic sway, a ‘90s dose of Velvet Crush and Choo Choo Train pop pining, and Cook’s heart-worn hangdog leading the way on another pop crusher. The album arrives on March 11th next year and there’s that lingering promise of the companion piece to follow after. Check out the static-smeared video above.
