Tobacco City – “Never On My Mind”

A while back I had up a great single from Chicago band Tobacco City and now it seems that the band’s long gestating debut LP is on the way from Scissor Tail in July. Draping themselves in the cosmic country sound that’s become so prevalent over the past few years, the band dims the lights and lets the smoke rings curl ‘round the sunset on “Never On My Mind.” On this cut, the b-side to the single from a few years back, the band dips their country in mournful soul waters. With just a touch of Linda Rondstat in the DNA here, Gene Clark curling at the edges, and a bit of Jessi Colter’s ‘70s prime pout in the mix, this showcases the band’s more clear-eyed counterpoint to the haze of “Blue Raspberry.” The new record, Tobacco City, USA, arrives July 30th.
