Saguaro – “Whistle Blow”
Stumbled on this nice collection of Cosmic Country from the West Coast and it slots right in with the last batch of faded valley sunsets that were rounded up on last year’s Deep In The Valley mix. Songwriter Jeffrey Phunmongkol mixes worn-in strums and silvered slides with a sauntered style of songwriting that nips at Kurt Vile’s relaxed countenance as often as it does a dustier strain of trail-beaten country. On Saguaro y Sol, Jeffrey wraps up a small cross-section of late afternoon nugs and easy ramblers. Standout “Whistle Blow” hangs heavy with a stumbled grace — a leaving lament that’s perfected with shimmers of pedal steel and steady-handed strums. Gonna have to keep an eye on Saguro, these are some solid cuts that get under the skin. The EP is out now.
