Rosali – “Mouth”

Again, the blessing and the curse of Bandcamp Fridays is that so much music comes at once that it’s sometimes easy to miss something special. Friday brought news that Philly songwriter Rosali’s new album No Medium is on the way from Spinster. Just off of the release of the excellent Yasmin Williams LP, the label’s roster has been nailing it this year and this first taste of No Medium proves it nicely. Featuring James Schroeder (Simon Joyner, DNG, Connor Oberst), Kevin Donahue (Simon Joyner) and David Nance, along with members of his backing band, the record wanders into the light with a burdened air, not quite sighing but keeping the feeling hovering close to the skin. Occupying some of the lamplit air, that Jess Williamson and Pearl Charles have found this year, “Mouth” is dense with the dust of the past and boarded on all sides with dark wood and painted glass. The song floats between the tailwinds of the Canyon country of the ‘70s and the scarred songwriting of Drag City’s soft underbelly — finding a home beside Bill McKay, Oldham, and P.G. Six. The new record arrives May 7th. It should probably be finding its way up to the top of your list about now.
