Ornament – “In Her Light”

Avatar

There’s been a nice ripple of ‘70s pop prominence running through the past few years, with the excellent new LP from Michael Rault already spawning two excellently lavish singles, his partner in song Pearl Charles running out of her last album with a few more disco-dripped gems, and Drugdealer and Weyes Blood finding solace in silken pop’s arms. Nashville’s Ornament have dabbled in the edges of AOR, but this time they go full-tilt Taupin and embrace gilded, yet tousled pop from Nilsson to Leon Russel on their latest single. With a slight southern tilt, much like Russel, pop’s greatest session man gone solo, the band feels more at ease than ever. From the piano saunter to the hidden wink at the edges of the vocal breaks, this is a personal best for the boys in Ornament. They dress up the single with a spare, but perfect video from Amanda Stone that features their friends in Shadow Show as the cast of players. The single will appear on a new album, Rock Solid, out later in the summer.
