Order of the Toad – “Subterranean”
Glasgow’s Order of the Toad have a new record just out and a video to accompany the stomping single “Subterranean. The band boasts members of a wide swath of indie outfits, including Current Affairs, The Wharves, Nightshift, and Robert Sotelo. The band’s last album mixed a sort of prog-folk air with punk wobble, but here the band are bolted down and driving through more classic territory. “Subterranean” taps into nodded-out bassline and a kind of puffing rhythm that lopes through the song with a muscular insistence. The guitars are hip-slung and swinging while undulating background vocals give the song one more pulse to lock onto. Beyond the backdrop lies Gemma Fleet’s soaring vocals. She wraps the track in a charisma that’s impossible to ignore, letting this single wrap itself around the brain and bake in nicely. The band’s latest, Spirit Man, is out now from Hidden Bay/Gringo.
