Nathan Bowles Trio – “The Ternions”

The folk docket for 2024 is getting thick and one more notable release slides up to the top today with the announcement of Nathan Bowles Trio. Formed with Bowles (Black Twig Pickers, Pelt) focusing on banjo, alongside double-bassist Casey Toll (Jake Xerxes Fussell, Mt. Moriah) and drummer Rex McMurray (CAVE), the album follows on his 2021 collaboration with Bill MacKay. The first cut from the NC trio finds the band working circular motions around the listener, spiraling towards the horizon with a hypnotic furl. Toll and McMurray hold the tiller steady while Bowles ties knots around the trio. Always lovely to see something from Bowles on the horizon. The new album, Are Possible, is out July 26th from Drag City.
