Magic Tuber Stringband – “Days of Longing”

Amazing news today as RSTB faves Magic Tuber Stringband make the jump to Thrill Jockey, following in the stead of other bluegrass and folk experimenters like The Black Twig Pickers, Sally Anne Morgan, and House and Land. The band has a knack for blending bluegrass, folk, gospel, and field recording into a wonderfully woolly mix of songs that feel tied to the traditional while eyeing the fires of a more modern hearth. The record also finds the band stretching the boundaries of their sound, moving from the usual strings and guitar to something fuller and more collaborative with percussion, clarinet, sax, singing saw, and more working in through friends and local legends that lend a hand to the upcoming Needlefall. “Days of Longing” winds around the listener, letting Evan and Courtney’s strings tangle until they’re devoured by twisted squalls. It’s a beautiful first taste of the new album. Needlefall arrives March 22nd from Thrill Jockey.
