GRAY/SMITH – “The Gray Funnel Line”
This album from NYC’s GRAY/SMITH pokes through out of nowhere, a dusted tangle from members of Rhyton, Pigeons, The Suntanama
and No-Neck Blues Band. With a lean towards Cosmic Americana that’s burnt and torn at the ends, the sounds on the band’s debut are that of two longtime heads finding a solace in rumpled relaxation. The whole album is lived in, finding space on the shelf just adjacent the smoke-curl cool of One Eleven Heavy and Wooden Wand in James’ more golden moments. The album closer, “The Gray Funnel Line,” finds the band at their most comfortable, playing with an understated grace that snakes through the speakers. The record is out now, a self-released gem that’s begging for the right kind of ears.
