Deniz Cuylan – “Flaneurs in Hakone”
by Andy
This one has taken a bit to get into the system, but its a lovely gem from the L.A. composer Deniz Cuylan. His fingerpicked runs sparkle with a pastoral calm that’s pitched between the flamenco traditionals and the more mesmerized works of Chuck Johnson and Glenn Jones. The run on “Flaneurs In Hakone” almost move like arpeggiated synths, burbling through the mind with an aqueous flow, but Cuylan’s picking lets the notes ring on the air with a natural shiver. The accompanying video fits the yearning nature of the song, cycling through impressionistic collages that match the song’s daydream coloration. The song appears on Deniz’ No Such Thing As Free Will, out now on Hush Hush Records.
