Communicant – “Prisoner Cloud”

Avatar

I missed out on this psych-pop cavalcade from L.A.’s Communicant when it surfaced earlier in the year but a recent art post from RSTB fave Callum Rooney caught my eye. The record is a sublimely textured collection of fizzing pop tracks that ripple in the sun. While the band have a heavy collection of singles strewn about from the album there’s more to love sandwiched in-between the pre-release fodder for sure. The stomping “Prisoner Cloud” moves from Stones-ian swagger to fog-shrouded cool in the space of seconds. The song shows the band at their best, tumbling over riffs and rhythms that snag the synapses, but layering in enough atmosphere to build out the song into more than just a simple revved up vamp vehicle. The band’s pulling from similar sources as Temples, Triptides, Lucille Furs, and The Babe Rainbow, but find plenty of room to make their own corner in a crowded psych-pop field. The record is out now on all manner of limited LP options.
