Axis: Sova – “Trend Sets”
RSTB faves Axis: Sova are back on the scene today and sounding as scrubbed up on first single “Trend Sets.” The band continues to evolve, having crawled from the subterranean fallout of their early records into a more pronounced pop sound on Shampoo You. With the addition of drummer Josh Johannpeter, the band fleshes out to a proper trio, adding his insistent pound to the metronomic snap of drum machines that have dominated past releases. Ty Segall steps into the production chair, helping songwriter Brett Sova hammer out his best hooks yet. “Trend Sets” finds a balance between post-punk and power pop — no easy feat to master. Itching like an outtake from Magazine’s Secondhand Daylight, the song creeps out of the crevices to explode in the latter half with brilliant neon licks. The band’s at their best, keep your ears perked, the new album, Blinded By Oblivion, lands on October 6th from God? Records.
