The Telephone Numbers – “Be Right Down”

Honestly, Slumberland’s rarely been on as big a tear as they have this year. Between the releases that are announced and the whiffs on the wires, it’s bound to be a banner year for the indie pop outpost. The label cues up another killer with the first single from an upcoming new album by RSTB faves The Telephone Numbers. The Bay Area strummers have always run concurrent with the crowd around The Reds, Pinks and Purples, with Glenn playing on and mixing their debut a few years back. An interim single from UK enclave Prefect kept the momentum, but it’s great to hear them on the cusp of a new album proper. Recorded by Alicia Vanden Heuvel at SF’s Speakeasy Studios, the new album finds the band pushing towards fuller arrangements, including horns and strings. The first taste of Scarecrow II finds them as bold and bright as ever, with Thomas Rubenstein’s songs jammed with jangles, and hung on hooks. “Be Right Down” is a sunny strummer slung with big choruses and boisterous organ swells. Get the new album high on your radar. Scarecrow II is out October 10th from Slumberland.
