Sharp Pins – “Queen of Globes and Mirrors”
Smudged with youthful infatuations with ‘60s strummers and lo-fi ‘90s Paisley Pop pickers, Kai Slater (Lifeguard, Dwaal Troupe) has a handle on the heartsick swoons that scratched off Nuggets singles and WEA comps that dig out bands with kitsch-crusted names like The Next Exit and The Misty Wizards. Though, Slater’s never playing it so straight as to feel pastiche. Taped and re-taped, dusted and draped in diaphanous shades, the songs feel like a memory of a memory; a recollection of a song heard wafting from car windows at a stoplight and never to be heard again except in dreams. The single gets an appropriately hazy video to match. “Queen of Globes and Mirrors” crops up on Sharp Pins latest album, Balloon Balloon, Balloon, out November 21st from K Records.
