Sachet – Taipei Learner

Always a highlight on the Aussie scene, Sachet digs into the frayed ends of the ‘90s, letting things smolder a little bit brighter on their new EP, Taipei Learner. The new EP opens with the snarl of “The Source,” the first taste of the cassette up until now, chasing turbulent riffs duct taped to a primal pound of drums. They smooth things out just a touch over the next five songs, sloping a synth or two into the mix but more often than not returning to the rock tumbler of fuzz riffs and smudged-glass lyrical longing of the opener. A few songs chew and spit hooks, hovering around the minute mark with punk precision, but the band feels more at home with a touch more menace to gnaw in their teeth. Like the opener, “Mr Hedgey” has its hackles raised and ready and closer “Not Having a Go” swings the listener around with dizzying speed. It’s the second short-form kicker since the band’s 2020 debut, and they seem to fit perfectly into the smash n’ grab of gritty six pack tapes. Limited to 50, so don’t miss.
