Galore

Adding to the golden age of indie pop that’s been emanating from the SF/Oakland axis these days, 2025 sees a return from RSTB faves Galore. The band’s last album was a perfect distillation of indie pop and post-punk, a fuller spectrum that moved beyond just the jangles. The band’s new album continues to keep a slippery handle on genre; leveling its sights on chiming guitars and honeyed harmonies, but leaving room for brill building lushness, the chirp and charm of field recordings, and a few brittle breaking points as well. Like a few of the best indie pop outfits running, the band makes full use of a stacked bench of songwriters and an equally outsized array of voices.

The record boasts a fuller sound than the first, a more velveteen cushion for those voices to fall against. The debut was produced by Sonny Smith, who’d headed up the band’s label at the time, Rocks In Your Head. As they make the move to Speakesy Studios SF for the new album they take a change behind the boards as well. This time around the band produce themselves with some help from Jason Kick and Simi Sohota (G. Green). The band feels fully in control of their sound, balancing the driving rhythms of “Zinger,” “Bastard,” and “Ladders” with quite a few delicately dreamy moments that play up the band’s ties to ‘60s pop. While there are certainly hooks that are gonna get lodged in your head for days, the band sticks just as solidly when they work atmosphere over angst. It’s a crowded field in indie pop this year, but not to count Galore among the best would be an unpardonable sin.
