Danny Ayala – “Pluto”
Currently slipping under the crowded public consciousness, the debut from Danny Ayala (The Lemon Twigs, Sunflower Bean) is an incredible distillation of power pop that picks apart the past and reorganizes it with the skill of a consummate pop alchemist. While the bulk of the beat on Danny’’s new album Only Fools Love Again leans towards the lush arrangements of Wilson and Nilsson, the glam crunch of “Pluto” provides an instant classic that’s candy coated and nervy with new wave energy. The song shifts between Apples In Stereo in their Velocity years, Moon Martin in the Hot House, and a pumped up Giorgio Moroder in his bubblegum guise. The ode to a demoted planet is a whiplash surprise in the midst of his modern classic (more on that soon). The song is out on Ayala’s album Only Fools Love Again, out now on Reminder Records.
