The Thorn – “Fountain”

A familiar face with a new name slips out a debut single today. Formerly known as Large Plants, who released two great albums on Ghost Box over the past couple of years, the band shuffles their lineup a bit and takes on the name of the Plants’ 2023 album The Thorn. The first single finds Jack Sharp (Wolf People) entwining vocals with Naomi Randall, giving a new depth and detail to the woodsmoke swept psych-folk. “Fountain,” with its mournful strings, soaring harmonies, and plaintive plucks, aligns the band’s new form closer to Trees, Pentangle, and Fairport territory. Randall fills the Sandy Denny role quite nicely, softening the singe that permeated Large Plants and giving the band just the thing they’d been looking for all along. Members of fellow UK psych stalwarts Green Seagull, Hanging Stars, and Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats round out the lineup. The first single is out direct from the band today, with more hopefully on the horizon soon.
