The Cosmic Tones Research Trio – “Sankofa”

Thrilled to see this one crop up this morning. Ever since the band’s announcement of East Coast dates, including this year’s stacked Woosist Fest, there’s been hints at a new album and this morning the first single from the upcoming new eponymous LP slips out. Dipping back into the deep well of cosmic jazz, spiritual undertones, and new age float of their debut, The Cosmic Tones Research Trio let “Sankofa” trickle over the listener. Melting piano lines and furrowed cello lap at the mind as burbling polyrhythms urge the listener closer to bliss. The band’s last album was a year-end contender around here, one of the best to hit last year and it’s great to see them follow on it so quickly and so sublimely. The new album is out October 3rd, once again for Mississippi Records.
