Tashi Dorji – “gathering”
A gentle tone and switch to the electric offers up a new shade for guitarist Tashi Dorji. For his third album with Drag City he’s pushed aside the frayed acoustic improvisations in favor of simmering electric string work that, despite its amplification, comes in much calmer than Dorji’s been for some time. Though, that calm comes with a price. The themes of the songwriter’s latest album are those of exhaustion and disappointment, reflections of the times in which they were made and in which they’ll be released. There’s, no doubt, a touch of tension below the surface, but “gathering” is a song worn down by the sandpaper of daily life in 2025. The cut is accompanied by a gorgeous video assembled from snippets shot by Robert Beatty over the past few years. It’s a glinting, abstract vision of warmth and faded comfort, something the song yearns for as much as anything. The new album, low clouds hang, this land is on fire, is out January 30th from Drag City.
