Spawn – “Ascension”
by Andy

Nine years in the making, the debut from Aussie psych collective Spawn invites the listener into a winding psychedelic journey. Simmered in the psych scorch of Stoner signifiers, shrouded in Doom clouds, and embracing their Aussie and East Asian roots, the record blends the growl of guitars with sitar stabs, theremin quiver, and the prog smoke of keys. The band pushes to ambitious heights, but none quite so towering as on the nearly nine-minute centerpiece “Ascension,” The piece glints with firelight and friction, a seething, roiling epic that ties together the band’s new album, Lite Rite. The record is out November 11th from Ramble Records.
