Ry Jennings – “Rollin in Her Grave”

Another sublime single slips out of the new solo record from Ry Jennings of RSTB faves Teddy and the Rough Riders. “Rollin’ In Her Grave” retains the sun-dappled ease that’s been a staple of the first couple of cuts from his new solo record, Whisperin’ Ry Jennings. Stripped back to an acoustic lilt, the song sways gently in the breeze, bronzed by honeysuckle hues that drift out of the speakers. Giving a some background on the cut, Ry explains, ““Fannie Mae Dees was an older lady Nashville resident in the 1970s that protested about the imminent domain land purchases that Vanderbilt was making. They took her house. She constructed a huge metal coffin in her front yard that read “you’re killing this neighborhood” and “Power covers the widows mite”. They named a park after her years later. With what’s happening in Nashville these days, she’s spinning.”

The Rough Riders have wavered between country’s classic era and a more fried cosmic strain, but this solo record seems to be something else entirely; a quieter, more comfortable hybrid of folk and country that fits in just right with newcomers like Winter McQuinn, Hot Apple Band, and perennial favorites Mapache. The new record is out September 5th from Nudie Records.
