Motherfuckers JMB & Co

This one ought to be getting a few more shouts, a rhythmic wrecker that slices the seance auras of kosmiche with noise. Bringing together members of Animal Collective, GWAR, Alter-Natives, and Third Eye Lounge through a shared love of outre-rock’s past, the debut record from Motherfuckers JMB & Co tips its hat to Xhol Caravan as it skids past Sun City Girls and latter-day saints like Water Damage. Feeling like it nods nicely to Jim Thomson’s time with the SST jazz-psych stompers Alter-Natives, the album casts a wide tractor beam across the spectrum of German Progressive, surf, fusion, noise, and psych. Pinned to the percussive pound of Thomson, the songs detonate in dank plumes of smoke and ash, dizzying displays of discord and heat.

The deeper the listener plummets into Music Excitement Action Beauty, the more the mire thickens. Loose n’ bubbly entry points like “Breakers Part 1” begin to blur in the rearview once they reach the cavernous careen of “Studio B” and “Metro 29.” Weitz’s hurdy gurdy howls around the edges of the pieces, adding to the aura of anxiety and disorientation, but the bass pulls the listener through. A lifeline in the haze and chaos of the band’s creations, the steady throb of Minsker’s bass always reappears through the mind fog to lead the listener past the aural shrapnel that dices up the album’s second half. A record that works like one incredible arc, Music Excitement Action Beauty is a heart-pounding journey into and out of the abyss. Don’t miss.
